Meet the Designer: The Creative Process Behind the Signature Series

Some bedrooms are designed to be functional. Others are designed to be beautiful. The most memorable bedrooms manage to be both.

At Luxotic, the Signature Series was created from the belief that bedding can contribute far more to a room than comfort alone. It can shape mood, introduce personality, and become the element that defines how a space feels.

Behind every design in the Signature Series is Kayla - a designer and watercolour artist whose creative process begins long before fabric and colour palettes are considered. It starts with imagination, inspiration, and a desire to create something that feels meaningful within the home.

This week, we are stepping behind the artwork to explore the thinking, influences, and creative philosophy that drives her work.

More Than a Pattern

When people think about bedding design, they often imagine colour selection, pattern development, and trend forecasting. While these elements all play a role, the Signature Series began with a much broader idea.

Kayla approached her collections with a desire to create something immersive. Rather than viewing bedding as a decorative surface, she explored how artwork could shape the entire experience of a room. The goal was not simply to create a pattern, but to create a visual world that invites people to slow down, observe, and engage with their surroundings.

"I wanted to create a dreamlike, transportive world that feels both calming and visually captivating."

This philosophy aligns closely with Luxotic's belief that a bedroom should feel personal and inspiring. A beautifully designed room is not just seen. It is experienced. Each collection in the Signature Series was designed to contribute to a distinct emotional mood rather than simply match a colour scheme.

Inspiration Found in Nature, Travel and Art

Creative inspiration rarely comes from a single source. Instead, it is often built from years of observation, experiences, and visual references gathered over time.

For Kayla, that inspiration spans travel, natural landscapes, art, books, films, games, and creative hobbies. As she puts it: "Creativity feeds creativity. Whether it's through films, books, games, or art from different cultures - it all feeds my soul and opens my mind, contributing to new ideas and perspectives."

Nature plays a particularly central role. Kayla spends time on bushwalks, immersing herself in the Australian landscape, and draws directly from those experiences. The tropical forest density, layered greenery, and immersive soundscape of the outdoors find their way into her designs in ways that feel genuinely lived-in rather than simply observed.

Traditional artistic influences also shape the work. Her designs draw on elements of chinoiserie - its rich storytelling through birds, botanicals, and nature across different regions - reinterpreted entirely through her own hand-painted style.

"I wanted to reinterpret chinoiserie through my own hand-painted style rather than a traditional aesthetic. Something that feels globally inspired yet contemporary and personal."

The Beauty of a Hand-Painted Process

In a world increasingly shaped by digital tools and automation, there is something compelling about work that clearly shows the hand of the artist.

Kayla describes the importance of creating artwork slowly and intentionally. Each design begins as a hand-painted watercolour composition, allowing colour, texture, and detail to emerge through the process rather than being generated through repetition.

The process is deeply intuitive. "There's no structure to it. I just get absorbed into the moment and try to create the outcome using a mixture of techniques. Sometimes you only need two layers. Sometimes you need five or six. It's a very fluid process."

This approach creates depth that is difficult to replicate digitally. Layering, brushwork, and the organic way watercolour behaves on paper contribute to a richness that gives each artwork its character. As Kayla notes: "In a world that's becoming increasingly digital and AI-driven, people are craving pieces that feel human - artwork and textiles that clearly show the hand of the artist."

Designs That Reward Closer Attention

Some designs reveal themselves immediately. Others reveal themselves gradually.

One of the defining characteristics of the Signature Series is the way details emerge over time. A quick glance may reveal colour and composition, but closer observation uncovers hidden layers, unexpected elements, and quiet storytelling.

Kayla describes the thinking behind the background of her design: "I laid a lot of dark foliages because I really wanted to create that tropical forest density - like you were really immersed in a forest. The motifs aren't just floating on top of colour. You get that background feeling."

A hummingbird feeding among blossoms, a lilac-breasted roller introducing a vibrant burst of colour and energy, small butterflies scattered throughout - these details are placed with intention, designed to encourage curiosity and reward exploration.

"It's a world that rewards a closer look. There is always something new to notice."

Designing for Feeling

The bedroom occupies a unique place within the home. It is often the first room we see in the morning and the last room we experience at night. Because of this, the feeling a room creates matters deeply.

Kayla is clear about what she wants people to feel waking up surrounded by her design: "Just that feeling of being immersed in the rainforest. When you walk into a rainforest, you hear the waterfalls, the birds, the leaves rustling - you're completely captured by your surroundings. You're connected to your body and the earth. That connection is what I wanted to bring into the bedroom."

She also describes what she hopes people feel more broadly from the Signature Series: "I hope people feel a sense of elevation in their space. That their bedroom becomes something more intentional and luxurious. I want the designs to evoke a mix of calm, wonder, and curiosity."

This sits at the heart of the Luxotic philosophy. A bedroom should not simply look good. It should feel like a place you genuinely enjoy spending time in.

Creating Rooms That Feel Personal

As interiors continue to evolve, Kayla sees a growing shift towards individuality. People are becoming more confident in expressing personality through their homes - seeking pieces that reflect their interests, experiences, and aesthetic sensibility rather than following uniform trends.

She describes the direction clearly: "There's a noticeable shift toward more imperfect, handmade-looking designs. People are craving pieces that feel human." Kayla brings this to life in her own home, which she is currently redesigning around a colourful feature wall, natural wood textures, built-in shelving for books and plants, and a fully layered bed.

This movement toward self-expression is one of the reasons the Signature Series exists. Each collection offers a different emotional world - some creating a sense of escape, others bringing drama, creativity, or warmth. Together, they encourage people to think about the bedroom not as a purely functional space, but as an extension of who they are.
